The Greenhush Award goes to Meet, Teams & Zoom – great for climate, but should speak up

Strong climate benefits of online meetings are poorly communicated, which is why Meet, Teams and Zoom win the Greenhush Award, presented Thursday 23rd of January at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

The Greenhush Award is the first in the world to acknowledge acts from corporations and NGO:s that are positive for the climate, but not sufficiently communicated. Sweden’s public transport won the very first award in 2023, and this year’s award goes to the three leading actors of digital meetings; Meet, Teams and Zoom.

The purpose of the Greenhush Award is to get more organizations to communicate their positive climate work, in an honest, relevant and engaging way. Just as greenwash is completely unacceptable, it is unfortunate that companies talk too little about what they actually do. We see a worrying trend of companies communicating less and less about their climate work, which makes it more difficult for consumers to make active, climate-driven choices, and increases the risk that those with a less impressive climate performance and less scruples step forward, says Lina Gustavsson, communications strategist and initiator of the Greenhush Award.

This year’s justification reads:

Online meetings through Meet, Teams, Zoom and other platforms are top-of-mind for the behavioral change that started during the pandemic and has now become the new normal. Meeting online instead of physically traveling saves time, reduces costs and helps us meet the climate challenge much faster than other transitions. Still, there is not much talk about how they are part of climate solutions, which is why they are awarded with the Greenhush Award.

Few behavioral shifts have become as obvious in such a short time as going online instead of travelling to yet another meeting. But not once in an online meeting have I received encouragement for this climate-smart behavior, or tips on how the climate benefit can increase further. We look forward to the laureates becoming better at communicating this so that more people can do more for the climate, which is the very purpose of the prize, says Mattias Goldmann, CEO of the 2030-Secretariat, where the Greenhush Award is based.

The award ceremony will take place on Thursday 23rd of January at 10.40, hosted by We Don’t Have Time at the World Economic Forum in Davos. As it should be, the award winners, recipients and hosts are in at least three different places in the world and meet online. Watch the prize ceremony here! The prize is a beautiful frame completely empty of content, to symbolize the need to communicate more.

The award has been developed by a jury that, in addition to Lina Gustavsson and Mattias Goldmann, also consists of Kaj Török from Max Hamburgare, Jens Olejak from South Pole and Francesca O’Brien, CEO of the Swedish Marketing Association. Partners of the award are South Pole.
